Inventory, Demo and Used: Which Tesla Orders a Referral Link Reaches

Referral guidance is written almost entirely for one buyer: someone configuring a brand-new car from scratch. Plenty of Teslas are not bought that way. Inventory cars, demonstrators, used stock and business purchases all reach checkout by different routes, and the useful question is not "is this code valid" but "can this route carry a referral at all".
The rule underneath every route
One fact governs all of them: the referral attaches to the order at the moment it is placed, through the link, and cannot be added afterwards. There is no retroactive application. Every route below is really a question about whether the link survives to the order step.
New custom order
The straightforward case. Open the referral link first, configure, and confirm the benefit line appears in the order summary before paying. This is the route every referral page describes, and the one where nothing surprising happens.
Existing inventory
Inventory cars are already built and are ordered from a listing rather than a configurator. The mechanism is the same — the referral has to be attached to the session before the order is placed — but the risk is higher, because inventory buying tends to be fast and it is easy to jump straight into a listing from a search result with no referral attached. If you intend to use a code on an inventory car, open the link before you start browsing stock, not after you have found the car.
Demonstrator and service-loaner stock
These are sold as used or as demonstrator vehicles depending on the market and their history. Where a car is sold as used, it is outside the new-order flow the referral programme is built around. This desk will not tell you it definitely cannot work, because the listing types Tesla offers change; it will tell you the check that matters: if the order screen shows no referral benefit before you pay, there is nothing to recover afterwards.
Used cars, Tesla-sold or private
A private sale involves no Tesla order, so there is no referral. Tesla-sold used stock is a used transaction rather than a new order. Treat a referral as unavailable on this route and be pleasantly surprised if a benefit line appears, rather than planning around one that does not.
Business, fleet and lease routes
Business purchases and leases add a third party — a leasing company or a fleet arrangement — that may place the order rather than you. If someone else places the order, the referral attaches to their order or not at all. Ask the question before signing, because the answer is entirely determined by whose account submits the order.
The eligibility layer on top
Route is only half the answer. Even on a perfect new order, the car has to be eligible: Model 3, Model Y and specific Cybertruck trims qualify, while Model S and Model X were removed from the programme in March 2026. A flawless referral on an ineligible car pays nobody — the eligibility narrowing is covered in what the February 2026 revision did to the eligible-model list.
