How to Tell a Live Tesla Referral Link From a Dead One

Because a referral cannot be added after an order is placed, every check worth doing happens before you press the button — and most of the reassuring signals people rely on prove nothing. Here is the short list that constitutes actual proof, and the longer list that does not.
What counts as proof
- The benefit line in the order summary, before payment. This is the only real proof. The reward for your market — 3 months of free FSD (North America) or free Supercharging (Europe) in North America — should be visible on the screen where you confirm the order. If it is not there, nothing else you have seen matters.
- The referral field is populated at the payment step. If the field is empty, paste the code there and re-check the summary. Do this before submitting, not after.
- The order confirmation repeats it. Once placed, the order should still show the benefit. If the summary showed it and the confirmation does not, that is worth raising with Tesla immediately rather than in a month.
What proves nothing
- The link opened the Tesla store. Any link does that. Landing on tesla.com says nothing about whether a referral was attached to your session.
- The code "looks valid". Codes are opaque strings; there is no format you can eyeball for validity, and a well-formed code can belong to an account that has hit its annual cap.
- A third-party page says the code is verified today. Including this one. A page can only tell you a code came from a real account; it cannot see your order.
- Someone else used it successfully last week. Eligibility is per order and per car. Their Model Y order says nothing about your Model S order, which cannot carry a referral at all since March 2026.
The failure that is easiest to cause yourself
Opening the referral link, then browsing away, comparing configurations across tabs, coming back through a search result and ordering from there. The order that gets placed is the one in the tab you finish in. If you are the kind of shopper who keeps eight tabs open — and most people configuring a car are — the safest sequence is to do all the browsing first, then open the referral link last, configure once, and order in that tab.
If you have already ordered without one
The honest answer is unwelcome and worth stating plainly rather than softening: there is nothing to recover on that order. Sources agree a referral cannot be applied after an order is placed, so support cannot attach one retroactively and no third-party page can either. What you can still do is separate: a future energy purchase is a different transaction and carries its own referral opportunity, and the benefit on a second vehicle later is unaffected by having missed it on this one.
If the summary does not show it
Do not place the order and plan to fix it. Sources agree on this point and it is worth being blunt: a referral cannot be applied after the order is placed. Close the flow, reopen the referral link, and configure again. Losing fifteen minutes of configuration is the cheapest possible version of this mistake.
