Model Y L: Why the Referral Trial's Value Doesn't Scale

Tesla's new six-seat Model Y L launched July 2, 2026, and within days I had a reader, Malik, ask whether ordering the pricier trim through my referral link would get him a bigger benefit. It won't — and walking through why is a useful lesson in how the referral program's math actually works, regardless of which Model Y you choose.
What actually launched, and what it costs
The Model Y L went on sale in the US and Puerto Rico on July 2, 2026, starting at $61,990 for the Launch Series — roughly 180 mm (about 7 inches) longer than the standard Model Y, seating six in a 2+2+2 layout, rated for approximately 325 miles of range. Tesla's full 2026 Model Y range, all-in with the $1,640 fee, now spans from $41,630 for the Standard RWD up to $63,630 for the Model Y L.

Why the referral trial doesn't scale with price
The referral benefit is 3 months of Full Self-Driving (Supervised), priced at Tesla's own $99/month rate for that feature — it's a fixed dollar figure tied to the FSD subscription price, not a percentage of the car's price. That means it's worth exactly the same $297 whether you order the cheapest Standard RWD or the priciest Model Y L. Nothing about the referral program scales the benefit up for a more expensive order, and I haven't seen anything suggesting that's changing.

Who this actually shortchanges
Nobody loses the benefit itself — it's the same $297 either way. What can shortchange you is the assumption Malik almost made: treating the referral trial as a meaningful offset against the roughly $22,000 gap between the Standard RWD and the Model Y L. It isn't, and budgeting as if it were is the actual mistake. If the extra seats and length are worth $22,000 to you on their own merits, order the Y L. If you're hoping a referral code closes any real part of that gap, it won't — you'd need to make that case on the car itself, not the referral math.
The one thing I still can't confirm
Separate from the value math: I haven't yet completed a Model Y L order myself to visually confirm the FSD trial line appears in the order summary the same way it does on a standard Model Y. My program data lists Model Y as fully eligible without carving out trims (unlike Cybertruck, where Dual Motor AWD is excluded) — so I expect it to apply — but "I expect" isn't "I've seen it." Whichever trim you order, check your own order summary for the line item before you pay.
What I told Malik
I told him to pick the trim based on whether he actually needs the third row and the extra length — not based on any assumption that a pricier order makes the referral code worth more. He ended up configuring the Standard RWD instead, which was a seating-needs decision, not a referral-math one, and that's exactly the right way to make it.
