Tesla Referral Code 2026: The Federal Credit Is Gone

By David · Published · Updated

I wrote the first version of this outlook on January 1, 2026, for readers planning a Tesla order this year without the federal purchase credit. I'm updating it today (July 2026) with one honest correction: a deadline I flagged as "coming up" back in January has now passed. Here's the full, current picture.

What's gone: the $7,500 purchase credit

The federal new-clean-vehicle credit (up to $7,500, Section 30D) ended for vehicles delivered after September 30, 2025. If you're ordering a Tesla in 2026, there is no federal point-of-sale credit available to you, regardless of income or which model you choose. That's settled fact at this point, not a forecast.

What replaced part of it: the loan-interest deduction

Separately, buyers can deduct up to $10,000 per year in interest paid on a new-vehicle loan, for loans originated after December 31, 2024, on vehicles with final assembly in the US — which covers a US-built Model 3, Model Y or Cybertruck. It runs through the 2028 tax year. I've written about the worked math elsewhere on this site; the short version is it's real money but nowhere near the old $7,500 credit for most buyers.

Unaffected by any of this

The referral code still applies 3 months of free FSD (North America) or free Supercharging (Europe).

Update — July 2026: the home-charger credit deadline already passed

Correction to my January outlook. Back in January I flagged the federal Section 30C home-charger credit — 30% of installation cost, up to $1,000 — as available "through June 30, 2026." That date has now passed. If you installed a qualifying home charger before that deadline, you should still be able to claim it on your 2026 return; if you're reading this after June 30, 2026 and haven't installed one yet, this specific credit is no longer available to you. I'd rather correct this plainly than leave a stale "still available" claim up.

What this means for a 2026 order, put together

Here's the honest stack for someone ordering today: no federal purchase credit (gone since Sept 2025); a loan-interest deduction if you're financing a qualifying US-built model (real, but smaller, and dependent on your rate and balance); no home-charger installation credit unless you already beat the June 30 deadline; and the referral code's 3-month, $297 FSD trial, which was never part of any government program and is unaffected by any of the above. State-level incentives are the one variable I can't generalize — check your state directly.

Why I'm flagging my own correction instead of quietly editing it

It would've been easy to just delete the "through June 30, 2026" line and reissue this without comment. I don't think that's honest. If you read the January version and were counting on installing a charger later in the year, you deserved to know that window closed — even if it's a slightly awkward thing to admit on my own site.
