He Ordered Without a Code. Here’s What Actually Happened.

I've gotten this message before, so instead of guessing I walked him through exactly what Tesla says to do — and I'm telling you the honest outcome instead of a tidy one.
What's supposed to happen
The referral benefit has to be attached before you place the order — ideally by opening the referral link first, so the code rides along with the whole configuration session. Once you've paid, the code isn't part of the order the way it would have been if you'd opened the link before configuring. That's the rule I repeat on every page of this site, and it's exactly the moment Owen had already passed.
What I told him to try
- Contact Tesla support immediately — through the Tesla app's chat, or by phone — rather than waiting to see if it "sorts itself out."
- Have the order number ready before he called, so the advisor didn't have to look it up while he waited on hold.
- Ask specifically whether a referral code can still be attached before the car is assigned to production — that's the honest framing, and it's the only window that matters.
- Get whatever answer he received in writing — a chat transcript or a follow-up email — rather than relying on a verbal "we'll flag it."
