Tesla Referral Link: The Link-Specific Questions I Get

My general FAQ page covers the program itself. This post is different — it's the handful of questions I keep getting specifically about how the referral link behaves, collected from reader emails through June and July 2026.
"Can I forward the link to someone else instead of them typing the code?"
Yes — that's actually the more reliable option. Forwarding my referral link by text or email works the same as opening it yourself: whoever opens it gets the code attached to their own session automatically, with nothing to retype.

"Does the link still work if I close the tab and come back the next day?"
Usually yes, but I don't recommend testing it. Tesla's session handling isn't something I can see from the outside, and I've heard from readers whose attachment survived an overnight gap and others whose didn't. The safe habit is the one I always give: open the link, then finish configuring and ordering in that same sitting if you can.
"I already started configuring on Tesla's site — can I still add the link?"
Sometimes, but it's the riskiest of the three scenarios above. If you've already been configuring without the link, open it in the same tab you've been using before you go further, rather than switching to a new one. If the referral field isn't populated by the time you reach checkout, don't guess — contact Tesla support before placing the order.
The Canadian version of this question
The Canadian version of these questions arrives with one extra: does the link even work the same way up here? It does. Canada sits in the same North American reward tier as the US, so an order placed there carries the identical 3 months of free FSD (Supervised) benefit, priced in Canadian dollars on Tesla's Canadian store, with the same link mechanics. The one thing that genuinely differs by country isn't the link — it's the incentive stack sitting alongside it: iZEV (up to $5,000 — closed); Electric Vehicle Affordability Program (EVAP) ($5,000 in 2026, then tapering); Provincial top-ups (stacks on the federal rebate).
"Does opening the link twice cause any problem?"
No — opening it again just re-attaches the same code to your current session. I actually recommend doing this deliberately: open the link once before you start configuring, then again right before you check out, as a way of confirming the attachment is still active rather than assuming it survived the whole session.
What that looks like in practice
you open the link at the start, configure the Model Y over about twenty minutes, then reopened the same link right before checkout as a check. The FSD trial line showed correctly, and he placed his order on July 6, 2026. His note back to me: “I was more worried about the link than I needed to be — the actual mechanics were simple, I just hadn't seen anyone explain them plainly.”
