Tesla Referral Link and Local Incentives in 2026

A reader named Renata emailed me on July 13, 2026 mid-move from Columbus, Ohio to Denver, Colorado, asking a version of a question I hadn't gotten quite this way before: "If I open your referral link and order while I'm technically still an Ohio resident, do I get Ohio's incentives or Colorado's?" Good question — and the honest answer starts with what the link does and doesn't do.
What the link controls, and what it never touches
My referral link does exactly one thing, everywhere, for everyone: it attaches a code to your Tesla account so the 3 months of free FSD (North America) or free Supercharging (Europe) shows up in your order summary. It has no idea what state, province or country you're in, and it has zero influence over any government incentive. Those two things — Tesla's referral benefit and your local incentive — are completely separate systems that just happen to both apply to the same purchase.

The detail Renata's question actually turned on
I'm not a tax advisor and I don't track every state's rulebook, so I told Renata the one general principle I'm confident is true: government EV incentives are generally tied to where the vehicle is registered, not where you were living when you clicked a link or placed an order. If she registers the Model Y in Colorado, it's Colorado's current rules that apply to her, not Ohio's — regardless of which state she was standing in when she opened my link. That's a genuinely different question from the referral benefit, which travels with the code no matter where she is.
The tool I actually pointed her to
Rather than guess at Colorado's current program, I sent Renata to the U.S. Department of Energy's Alternative Fuels Data Center (afdc.energy.gov), which keeps a "Laws and Incentives" search by state — a primary government source, not a blog's summary that might already be stale by the time you read it. That's the same habit I'd recommend for any state: don't take a referral site's word for what your state currently offers, including mine. Go to the primary source, because these programs change on their own schedule, independent of anything Tesla does with the referral program.
What's actually fixed vs what she had to look up herself
- Fixed everywhere: the 3-month FSD (Supervised) trial from the referral code — identical for every eligible North American order, no matter which state.
- Fixed everywhere: the separate federal auto-loan-interest deduction (up to $10,000/year, for loans on US-built vehicles originated after December 31, 2024) — a federal rule, not a state one.
- Different by state, and something I don't guess at: any state EV rebate, tax credit or registration-fee break, which depends on where the car ends up registered and changes on each state's own timeline.
How Renata's order actually went
She placed her Model Y order on July 15, 2026, from a hotel room in Denver, having already updated her address with Tesla to reflect the move. The FSD trial from my link showed correctly in her order summary — that part was never in doubt. What she still had to do herself was check Colorado's current program on the AFDC site before delivery, because that's not something a referral code or a blog post can verify on her behalf.
The pattern I'd tell anyone relocating around an order
If you're moving states (or countries) around the time you're ordering, separate the two questions cleanly: the referral link and its FSD trial travel with you and don't care about geography, but any government incentive is tied to where you'll actually register the car — and you should confirm that directly with an official source, not a referral page, including this one.
