Using a Tesla Referral Link When You Order via the App
By David · Published
A reader named Priyanka messaged me on July 12, 2026 after ordering her Model 3 entirely on her phone, through the Tesla app rather than a desktop browser. She wanted to know if my referral link even works the same way on mobile. It does — with one extra thing worth checking that desktop buyers don't need to think about.
Browser link, app order — do they talk to each other?
Priyanka's situation is more common than I expected: she opened my referral link in her phone's regular browser (Safari, in her case), which is exactly how the link is meant to be opened. From there she had a choice — keep configuring in that same mobile browser tab, or switch over to the Tesla app once she'd started an account. She switched to the app partway through, which is the one moment worth being careful about.

The one extra step for app buyers
When you open the referral link in a browser and then move into the Tesla app to finish, the code attachment is tied to your Tesla account once you sign in — not to the browser tab itself. So the practical rule is: open the link and make sure you're signed into (or creating) your Tesla account before you switch to the app. Priyanka had done exactly that, signing in from the browser session the link had opened, so the attachment carried over cleanly when she moved to the app.
Where this could go wrong
If you open the Tesla app cold — without ever having opened the referral link in a browser first, and without being prompted to sign in from that same session — there's a real risk the code never gets associated with your account at all. I don't have visibility into Tesla's app internals to promise this always fails or always works; what I can tell you is the safest order of operations, which is link first, sign-in second, app third.
What Priyanka's order summary showed
Because she'd signed in before switching apps, her Model 3 order summary showed the 3-month FSD (Supervised) trial correctly on July 12, 2026 — worth about $297 at Tesla's $99/month price. She checked that screen specifically before confirming, which is the same advice I'd give any buyer regardless of device.
Does this differ outside North America?
The app-vs-browser mechanics are the same everywhere — it's the underlying benefit that changes by region, not how the link attaches. A UK buyer ordering the same way through the app would see the European reward instead: About 2,000 km (~1,300 miles) of free Supercharging on Model 3 and Model Y — Tesla doubled this across Europe in April 2026. FSD (Supervised) is not yet approved for public use in most of Europe, so the benefit is Supercharging rather than an FSD trial.
My actual recommendation
If you have the choice, I still tell people to complete the whole order — configuration through checkout — in the same mobile browser tab the link opened, rather than jumping into the app partway through. It's not that the app doesn't work; it's that adding an extra hand-off point is one more place a session detail can go wrong, and the browser-only path is the one I can vouch for most confidently because it's what I've walked the most readers through.
