Cybertruck Went Up $5,000 — With No Explanation

On 25 August 2026 Tesla quietly put $5,000 on two of the three Cybertruck trims. No announcement, no explanation, and — this is the part worth sitting with — no change to the truck. Same motors, same equipment, same features. If you had a Cybertruck configuration saved from last week, it is now wrong.

Two of three trims, then. The Cyberbeast — already the most expensive — was left alone, which is the opposite of what you would expect if this were about repositioning the range upward from the top.
The part that makes it strange
Price rises usually arrive attached to something: a new battery, a new interior, a trim renamed and repackaged. This one arrived attached to nothing. There is no mechanical change, no equipment change and no feature change to account for it, and Tesla published no reason.
It is also happening into weak demand rather than strong. Cox Automotive put US Cybertruck sales at 3,519 in the first quarter of 2026 — down 45.1% year on year and about 15% on the quarter before. Raising the price of a slow-selling vehicle is not the textbook move, so I would treat any confident explanation you read — margin repair, tariff pass-through, deliberate wind-down — as a guess. Mine would be too.
What this does to the referral maths
Here is the bit I can actually be precise about. My referral link does not apply a percentage discount. It adds a fixed benefit — currently 3 months of Full Self-Driving (Supervised), worth about $297 at Tesla's own $99/month rate. That number did not move on 25 August.
So the benefit is unchanged in dollars, and slightly smaller as a share of the purchase. On a Dual Motor AWD it went from roughly 0.42% of the price to roughly 0.40%. That is a rounding error in practice, and I mention it only because "the referral is worth less now" is the kind of thing that gets repeated without anyone checking. It is worth the same. The truck costs more.
If you were about to order
Two honest observations. First, this is the only referral-eligible vehicle whose price moved in August, so if you were choosing between a Model 3, a Model Y and a Cybertruck partly on price, the gap just widened by $5,000 against the truck. Second, an unexplained increase tells you nothing reliable about the next one. I would not order early to "get ahead of" a further rise, and I would not wait for a reversal either — there is no published pattern here to plan against.
