Six Months On: What Subscription-Only FSD Changed for US Buyers
By David · Published
On 14 February 2026 Tesla removed the one-time Full Self-Driving purchase in North America, leaving a $99 per month subscription. Six months of hindsight is enough to say which of the predicted consequences actually materialised for buyers using a referral code — and the answer is mostly about calendars.
What the change did to the benefit's meaning
Before February, "3 months of free FSD" read as a taste of something purchasable — a feature you might later buy outright and keep. After it, the same words describe a free trial of a subscription. The benefit is identical; the default at the end of it is not. Doing nothing after month three does not return you to your starting position, it starts a monthly charge.
The re-pricing nobody announced
Subscription-only also fixed the trial's cash value at something arithmetic rather than notional: 3 × $99 ≈ $297. That is a cleaner number than the old comparison against a several-thousand-dollar purchase price, and it is the honest figure to weigh a referral against. It also made the benefit conditional on who you are — the subscription was cut to $49 a month for prior Enhanced Autopilot owners in late January 2026, so the same trial is worth roughly half to them, which this desk covered in the Enhanced Autopilot case.
Europe followed, and stayed on charging
Europe and the UK lost the one-time purchase on 22 May 2026, moving to €99 / £99 monthly. Notably the European referral benefit did not become an FSD trial as a result: it remains Supercharging distance, doubled to roughly 2,000 km in April 2026. Regulatory approval, not pricing, is the gate there — an EU-wide framework discussion in June 2026 was discussion-only, with the next window in October 2026 and EU-wide approval possibly slipping to 2027.
What it did to owning FSD at all
The quieter consequence is that FSD stopped being a thing you can own on a new car in North America. Before February, a buyer could pay once and treat the feature as part of the car — including at resale, where a car with FSD attached was a different proposition to one without. Subscription-only removes that: the feature now follows the account and the billing relationship rather than the vehicle. For a referral trial that means the benefit is unambiguously a service sample, not equipment, and nothing about it adds to the car you eventually sell.
The one habit worth forming
Because the benefit is now a trial of a recurring bill, the useful advice is administrative rather than technical: note the end date on the day the trial starts, and manage it in the Self-Driving app that shipped on AI4 cars in spring 2026. That is a boring sentence and it is the difference between a $297 benefit and a $297 benefit followed by an unnoticed $99 monthly charge.
