If You Already Own Enhanced Autopilot, the FSD Trial Is Worth About Half

Referral pages quote one value for the North American benefit: 3 months of FSD at $99 a month, so about $297. That figure is right for most buyers and wrong for one group. In late January 2026 Tesla cut the FSD subscription to $49 per month for owners who had previously bought Enhanced Autopilot — which means the identical trial is worth roughly half as much to them.

The arithmetic, both ways

The trial is denominated in months, not dollars, so its cash value is whatever those months would have cost you:

• New buyer, no prior Enhanced Autopilot: 3 × $99 ≈ $297.
• Prior Enhanced Autopilot owner: 3 × $49 = $147.

Same benefit, same programme, roughly half the value — because the counterfactual is cheaper. This is the kind of detail that gets flattened out of referral content, since a single headline number is easier to write than a conditional one.

Why it is the right way to price a trial

A free trial is worth what you would otherwise have paid. Since February 2026 there is no outright FSD purchase in North America — only the subscription — so "three months free" is three months of a bill you did not pay. If your bill would have been $49, that is what the trial saved you.

Who this actually applies to

Enhanced Autopilot was sold as a paid option on earlier cars, so the discounted rate is aimed at existing owners rather than first-time buyers. The group where it bites hardest is the one adding a second Tesla: the referral benefit on the new car is real, and it is worth meaningfully less to them than the number printed on most referral pages — which is worth knowing before it becomes the deciding factor in a purchase it should not decide.

What it does not change

Three things stay identical regardless of which rate applies to you:

• The trial still has to be attached at checkout and cannot be added afterwards.
• It still converts to a paid subscription at the end of month three unless you act — see managing the end date.
• The referrer's side is unaffected: Tesla Credits, capped at 10 successful referrals a year.

How to tell which rate applies to you

Do not infer it from a forum post. The subscription screen in the Tesla app quotes the price your account would pay, and that is the figure the trial is worth to you. If it shows $49, you are being treated as a prior Enhanced Autopilot owner; if it shows $99, you are not. Check it before the trial ends rather than after, because the number also tells you what the renewal will cost.

The honest recommendation

Use a code anyway. Even at the lower valuation the trial costs you nothing, and there is no downside to having it attached. Just size it correctly in your own head: if you are an Enhanced Autopilot owner comparing a referral trial against, say, a wheel upgrade or a paint option, you are comparing against $147 of value, not $297.
