The End Date Is the Whole Job: Managing a Three-Month FSD Trial

By David · Published

On 14 February 2026 Tesla removed the one-time Full Self-Driving purchase in North America, leaving a $99 per month subscription. That single change re-priced the referral benefit here: 3 months free is now 3 × $99 ≈ $297 of subscription, and a subscription has a renewal date. Managing that date is most of the value.

Why the framing changed

When FSD could be bought outright, "three months free" read like a sample of something you might later own. Subscription-only changes the default: doing nothing at the end of month three does not return you to where you started — it starts a recurring bill. Nothing about that is hidden or unfair, but it is a different shape of benefit than most referral pages describe, and it is the reason this desk treats the end date as the deliverable.

Day one: write the end date down

The most useful thing a new owner can do on the day the trial appears is put its end date in the same calendar they keep everything else in. Three months is long enough to forget and short enough that a forgotten renewal is a full month's charge before anyone notices. This is unglamorous advice and it is the advice that actually saves money.

Where the renewal surfaces

On AI4 (HW4) cars, Tesla's spring 2026 software introduced a dedicated Self-Driving app, and that is where the subscription state lives: whether FSD is active, what it renews as, and the controls to stop it. Older interfaces surface the same thing under the car's software or subscription screens. Whichever you have, the rule is the same — check it inside the car or the Tesla app, not on a forum.

European trials now also carry an end-of-trip driver-attentiveness grade, introduced in August 2026 in Amsterdam. It is not a North American change, but it is a fair signal of what a supervised system asks of a driver during a trial: it is not a hands-off period.

The month-three decision, honestly framed

Three questions decide it, and none of them are about the referral:

  • Did you use it? Trial usage is the only honest predictor of paid usage. A trial spent mostly on Autopilot-style highway driving is a poor case for $99 a month.
  • Do your regular routes suit it? The system's value is route-shaped, not opinion-shaped.
  • Would you re-subscribe seasonally? A subscription can be stopped and restarted. A road-trip month is a legitimate reason to pay for one month and stop again.

What the referral does and does not decide

The referral decides one thing: whether you get the 3-month trial at all, and that is settled at checkout — it cannot be added afterwards. It does not affect the subscription price, and it does not create an obligation to continue. Applying a code and then cancelling at the end of month three is a completely normal outcome and costs the referrer nothing.
