The Model 3 Standard Sits at $36,990 — and That Changes What a Referral Is Worth
By David · Published
US pricing for 2026 puts the Model 3 Standard at $36,990 and the Model Y Standard at $39,990, as reported in Edmunds' 2026 pricing coverage. The referral benefit did not change — but what it is worth relative to the purchase did, and that is the part worth doing arithmetic on.
Two different units of measurement
The North American referral benefit is 3 months of Full Self-Driving (Supervised) — a benefit measured in months of a subscription. At Tesla's $99 monthly price that is about $297 of value. The car is priced in dollars. So as the entry price falls, a fixed-value trial becomes a larger fraction of the transaction, without Tesla touching the referral programme at all.
The share, at both ends of the range
Against a $36,990 Model 3 Standard, roughly $297 of trial is about 0.8% of the purchase. Against a car in the seventies — a loaded Model Y or a Cybertruck — the same trial is nearer 0.4%. Neither number is large, and that is precisely the point this desk keeps making: the referral benefit is worth having and is never worth reorganising a purchase around. What the 2026 pricing does is double its relative weight at the cheap end of the range.
Where it actually matters
Buyers at the entry price are the most price-sensitive buyers Tesla has, and they are the ones most likely to be choosing between the base car and one option. In that decision, a trial worth roughly $297 is genuinely comparable to a paint or wheel upgrade — which is a different conversation than it is for someone specifying a car twice the price.
What has not changed
The mechanics are unmoved by pricing: the benefit attaches at checkout, cannot be added after the order is placed, and applies to Model 3, Model Y and eligible Cybertruck configurations only. Model S and Model X have been outside the programme since March 2026. The how-it-works guide carries the full rules.
What the benefit does not do to the price
One clarification that matters more at the entry price than anywhere else: the referral benefit is not money off the car. It does not reduce the purchase price, the amount financed, or the figure any tax or incentive calculation is based on. A $36,990 Model 3 ordered with a referral code is still a $36,990 Model 3 — you simply also have a software trial attached. Buyers at the bottom of the range are the most likely to be sizing a loan or checking an incentive threshold to the dollar, and the referral benefit will not move either number by a cent.
One number this desk will not print
You will find the referrer's side quoted as both $250 and $500 across otherwise credible sources. Rather than pick one, the honest statement is the mechanism: the referrer is paid in Tesla Credits, capped at the first 10 successful referrals in a calendar year, and the amount posted to an account is visible in that account's own Tesla app.
