The Six-Seat Model Y L Went on Sale From $61,990 — Is It Referral-Eligible?
By David · Published
Tesla started US sales of the Model Y L — a stretched, six-seat Model Y — from $61,990 on 2 July 2026, and the variant has since taken EU type approval. Every new variant raises the same question for anyone about to order with a code: does the referral programme cover it? The answer deserves more care than "it is a Model Y, so yes".
Why the question is not trivial
The eligible list is written by model family — Model 3, Model Y, Cybertruck — which makes it tempting to assume any variant of an eligible family qualifies. Cybertruck is the counter-example that should stop you: eligibility there is trim-specific, covering Premium AWD and Cyberbeast while excluding the Dual Motor AWD. Tesla has therefore demonstrated, in the current rulebook, that it will exclude individual trims inside an eligible family.
Where a six-seat layout changes the buying question
There is a second-order point worth making, because it is the reason this variant exists. A six-seat Model Y competes for buyers who were otherwise looking at a Model X — and Model X has been outside the referral programme since March 2026. For a family that needs a third row, moving from an X to a Model Y L is therefore the rare configuration change that adds a referral benefit rather than losing one. That is a genuinely useful thing to know before the shortlist is settled, and it is not something Tesla's own pages will frame for you.
What can be said with confidence
The Model Y family is in the programme. No source this desk has seen reports a Model Y L exclusion, and there is no obvious reason for one — it is a body variant rather than a different powertrain tier. So the likely answer is that it qualifies.
What cannot
"Likely" is not "confirmed", and this is a case where the cost of being wrong is the entire benefit, because a referral cannot be attached after an order is placed. The check is free and takes one screen: configure the Model Y L through the referral link and look for the benefit line in the order summary before paying. If it appears, the variant is eligible for your order — which is the only eligibility question that matters to you.
The same question in Europe, with a different answer shape
The Model Y L has also taken EU type approval, and European configurator source code has referenced it — so the variant is coming to markets where the referral benefit is Supercharging distance rather than an FSD trial. That changes what an eligibility question is worth answering for: a European buyer is asking whether roughly 2,000 km of charging attaches, not whether a software trial does. The mechanism is identical, the reward is not, and a page that answers only the North American version of the question is half a page.
The pattern worth remembering
Tesla ships variants faster than referral documentation is updated, and third-party referral pages update slower still. Any page — including this one — that lists eligible cars is a snapshot. The order summary is live. When a page and the order screen disagree, believe the order screen.
