Supercharger Search Landed in 2026.26 — Useful If You Are Burning a Charging Reward

Release 2026.26, which began rolling out in August 2026, shipped Preferred Routes, Automatic Navigation, Grok Commands and — the item with a referral consequence — Supercharger Search. For North American buyers the referral benefit is a software trial, so charging rewards read as a European story. It is worth understanding anyway, because the reward clock it interacts with is the tightest one in the programme.
The clock this feature runs against
Referral rewards do not all expire at the same speed. Tesla Credits last 12 months from their Grant Date; Supercharging distance lasts 6 months. Where the referral benefit is denominated in kilometres — mainland Europe, where it was doubled to roughly 2,000 km in April 2026 — the holder has half as long to use it, and using it requires physically visiting stalls.
Why search, specifically
Finding a Supercharger has never been hard on a Tesla; the map has always shown them. Search is a different tool: it helps you find a particular stall on a route you are already planning, which is exactly the task facing someone deliberately routing through Superchargers to spend a reward before it lapses. Combined with Preferred Routes, the update makes "route via a Supercharger" a repeatable habit rather than a per-trip chore.
Why search beats the map for this job
The distinction is small and practical. The map answers "where are the Superchargers", which is the question you have on an unfamiliar route. Search answers "is there one at the place I already intend to stop", which is the question you have when you are deliberately routing a reward down. Those are different tasks, and until this release the second one meant panning around a map by hand at the planning stage rather than typing a place name.
The North American reading
US and Canadian buyers get 3 months of free FSD (North America) or free Supercharging (Europe) rather than charging distance, so none of this changes the value of a code here. It does affect anyone holding Tesla Credits, since Supercharging is one of the things credits can be spent on through the Loot Box — and credits, unlike a charging allowance, are consumed on your schedule rather than the stall's.
The rest of 2026.26, read for the same purpose
Two other features in the same release touch a trial rather than a reward. Preferred Routes lets a driver bias navigation toward roads they actually like, and Automatic Navigation starts routing without being asked. Both are the kind of thing a supervised-driving trial gets judged on: a three-month FSD trial is evaluated on the routes you drive anyway, so a car that routes you consistently gives you a fairer test than one you fight with. If you are inside a referral trial and deciding whether to keep paying at the end of it, updating the car before you judge it is not a small thing.
What the update does not do
It does not extend any deadline, and no software feature will. A charging reward that lapses is gone; Tesla emails a 30-day warning first. The only mechanism that moves a deadline is earning again — a further successful referral extends the whole balance to 12 months from the newest Grant Date, which is covered in the extension rule.
