Tesla's March 2026 Referral Shakeup: Who Lost a Benefit

Tesla overhauled the Referral and Loyalty programs in March 2026, and within days I had a reader — a Model X owner named Farid — emailing to ask why my referral code "didn't do anything" on his order. It wasn't broken. Model X buyers lost the referral benefit entirely that month. Here's the full, dated list of who actually lost something, and who this changes nothing for.
Loser #1: Model S and Model X buyers
As of March 2026, Model S and Model X were removed from the referral program entirely — no FSD trial, no Supercharging credit, nothing. This isn't new information on my site; it's why my own Model S page and Model X page already say "no referral benefit." What was new in March 2026 was the change itself, and Farid's email is the kind of confusion it caused: he'd read an older post (not mine) still describing an S/X referral perk, applied a code expecting something, and got nothing because the program had genuinely changed under him.
Loser #2: Loyalty-program members on premium trims
Separate from referrals, Tesla's Loyalty discount on premium vehicles was cut from $1,000 to $500 in the same March 2026 update. Loyalty and Referral are two different Tesla programs that get conflated constantly — Loyalty rewards repeat owners re-ordering; Referral rewards a new buyer using someone else's code. If you're a repeat Tesla owner, this cut affects you regardless of whether you use a referral code at all.

Loser #3: anyone who lets a credit sit unused
The other detail from this update worth flagging: referral and loyalty credits now expire 12 months after the Grant Date. That's a real deadline, not a formality — if you earn $250 in Tesla Credits from referring someone, mark a calendar reminder, because letting it sit past a year forfeits it.
Who this doesn't touch at all
If you're ordering a Model 3, Model Y, or eligible Cybertruck (Premium AWD or Cyberbeast — Dual Motor AWD is still excluded), the referral benefit is exactly what it was before March: 3 months of free FSD (Supervised), about $297 of value. Farid's confusion was specific to Model X; it wasn't a sign the whole program had gotten worse for everyone.
What I told Farid
I confirmed for him that his Model X order simply wasn't eligible anymore, pointed him to Tesla's own refer-and-earn page to see the current terms in writing, and suggested he not spend more time trying to get a code to "work" on a vehicle the program no longer covers.
