“Pending” in the Tesla App: What Happens Between Order and Grant
By David · Published
Between a friend placing an order and the reward appearing as spendable, the Tesla app shows the referral as pending. That word causes a lot of unnecessary emails, because it looks like the state a failed referral would be stuck in. It is not. Here is what the pending window actually is, and what a real failure looks like instead.
What pending means
Pending means the referral has been recognised and the benefit has not yet been granted. Nothing is spendable in this state, and nothing should be: the expiry clocks described in the extension rule start from the Grant Date, not from the order date. A long pending window is therefore not lost time — the clock has not started.
Why the gap exists at all
An order is not a completed sale. Configurations change, orders are cancelled, deliveries slip. Tesla grants the referral benefit once the transaction is settled enough to be real, which is why the app has a pending state rather than crediting the moment a configuration is submitted.
For the buyer, this is invisible and irrelevant: the buyer's side — 3 months of free FSD (North America) or free Supercharging (Europe) — attaches to the order itself and shows in the order summary before payment. The pending state belongs to the referrer's side of the transaction.
What would actually mean it failed
Three things genuinely break a referral, and none of them look like pending:
- The link was never attached. A referral cannot be added after the order is placed — there is no retroactive fix. If the order summary never showed the benefit, the referral did not attach, and the pending state is not what you are looking at.
- The car is not eligible. Model S and Model X were removed from the programme in March 2026, and Cybertruck eligibility is trim-specific. An ineligible car produces no referral at all.
- The annual cap is reached. Only the first 10 successful referrals in a calendar year pay the referrer. Number eleven is a completed sale with no credit attached.
How to check without guessing
Two screens settle almost every question here. The buyer's order summary, before payment, is the only proof the benefit attached — the pre-order checks that actually prove this are collected in how to tell a live referral link from a dead one. The referrer's Tesla app is where the pending state resolves into a granted balance with a date on it. Neither question is answerable from a third-party page, including this one.
The one deadline that is easy to miss
Once granted, credits carry a real expiry — 12 months for Tesla Credits, 6 months for Supercharging distance — and Tesla emails a 30-day warning before they lapse. That email is the last reliable prompt you will get. If it arrives and the Loot Box has nothing you want, the honest answer is that the balance is about to become nothing at all; a further referral before the deadline extends the whole balance instead.
New buyers can skip all of this. The mechanics that apply to you are in the how-it-works guide, and the reward for your market is on your country page.
